Nişantaşı is one of the calmer places to base yourself in Istanbul. It is a residential neighbourhood of tree-lined streets and early-20th-century apartment buildings, with designer shops, cafés and restaurants at street level. You give up the view of domes and minarets you get in the old city, and in return you get quiet nights, good food within a few minutes’ walk and a metro station that reaches most of the city.
Who Nişantaşı suits
- Shoppers. The main shopping streets are in the middle of the neighbourhood, so you can drop bags at the hotel between stops. See shopping in Nişantaşı.
- Repeat visitors. If you have already seen the main sights, this is a place to experience Istanbul as locals do. And if you have not, the old city is a direct metro ride away; see getting to the old city.
- Families and anyone who wants to sleep. Evenings are lively but not loud; the nightlife is in Beyoğlu, not here.
- Business travellers. The Levent and Maslak business districts are a few stops north on the same metro line.
If this is your first trip and you mainly want to see Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace, compare with staying in Sultanahmet or Taksim first.
Which part of the neighbourhood
Around Abdi İpekçi and Teşvikiye streets
The centre of it all: flagship boutiques, the busiest cafés, and the shortest walk to everything. Expect higher room rates and more street life in the evening.
Maçka
The slope down towards Maçka Park is greener and quieter, with some of the city’s best-known luxury hotels. You are still only a short walk from the shops, and closer to the Bosphorus waterfront at Beşiktaş.
Near Osmanbey metro
The northern edge, towards Osmanbey station, is busier and more ordinary, but hotels here tend to cost less and the metro is on your doorstep. A good choice if you plan to use public transport a lot.

Frequently asked questions
Is Nişantaşı safe at night?
Yes. It is one of the calmer and more comfortable parts of the city to walk around in the evening. Take the usual big-city care with your phone and bag in busy places.
How far is it from Taksim?
One stop on the M2 metro, from Osmanbey to Taksim, or a walk of about 15 to 20 minutes along Halaskargazi and Cumhuriyet avenues.
Is Nişantaşı good for families?
Yes. Evenings are lively without being loud, and Maçka Democracy Park is close by for children to run around. The streets are hilly, so a light stroller is easier than a large one.
Can I see the Bosphorus from my hotel?
From some hotels on the Maçka slope and from upper floors of the taller hotels, yes. Views are usually tied to specific room types, so check the room description before you book.
