How do I get to the piers from Nişantaşı?

  • Beşiktaş: a downhill walk of 20 to 30 minutes through Maçka and past the Akaretler row houses, or about 10 minutes by taxi. Dentur boats leave from here, and the public long tour calls here in the morning on its way north.
  • Kabataş: take the M2 metro one stop from Osmanbey to Taksim, then the F1 funicular down to Kabataş, about 15 minutes in all. Dentur boats and many organised cruises start here.
  • Eminönü and Karaköy: from Kabataş, the T1 tram runs along the water to Karaköy and Eminönü in about 15 minutes. Or take the M2 to Haliç and walk down to Eminönü in about 10 minutes. The public tours and Turyol boats start here. See getting to the old city for both routes.

The walk back up from the water is steep, so most people take a taxi or the funicular for the return.

The public long tour, step by step

The city ferry company, Şehir Hatları, runs one long tour a day. In the timetable at the time of writing, the boat leaves Eminönü at 10:35 and calls at Beşiktaş at about 10:50, so you can board 15 minutes’ walk from Maçka. It stops on the way at Üsküdar, Kanlıca, Sarıyer and Rumeli Kavağı, and reaches Anadolu Kavağı, the last village before the Black Sea, at about 12:25.

The boat waits there until about 15:00. That gives you time for a fish lunch on the harbour and the climb up to the ruins of Yoros Castle, which looks out over the mouth of the Black Sea. The return reaches Beşiktaş at about 16:25. Summer timetables add departures, so check the times the day before you go.

Pay at the tour ticket office on the pier, and ask whether your Istanbulkart is accepted for the tour fare. If you get a paper ticket, keep it: you need it for the return. Tea and simit, the sesame bread ring, are sold on board.

What will I see?

Going north from the old city, Europe is on your left and Asia is on your right.

  • On the European shore: Dolmabahçe Palace, Çırağan Palace (now a hotel), the Ortaköy Mosque under the first Bosphorus bridge, the waterfront villas of Arnavutköy and Bebek, and the fortress of Rumeli Hisarı under the second bridge.
  • On the Asian shore: the Maiden’s Tower off Üsküdar, Beylerbeyi Palace, the Kuleli military school, Anadolu Hisarı and the wooden yalı mansions of Kandilli and Kanlıca.
  • Further north, on the long tour only: the fishing villages of Sarıyer and Anadolu Kavağı and the third bridge on the horizon.

When is the best time for a Bosphorus cruise?

  • Late afternoon and sunset are the most popular. The light falls on the Asian shore and the bridges are lit up as you come back.
  • Mornings are quieter, and the sun lights up the palaces on the European shore.
  • Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons. In summer, sit in the shade; from November to March, the open deck is cold and windy, so bring a warm layer even on a sunny day. Our month-by-month guide has more.
  • Weekends and holidays are busy on the public boats. Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early for a good seat.

Tips

  • Upstairs at the back has the best open views; downstairs inside is warmer and has the toilets.
  • For a short trip with children, the 20 minute ferry to Üsküdar or Kadıköy is often enough. See Nişantaşı with children.
  • To spend the day on the Asian side or in the Bosphorus villages instead, see our day trips.
  • If someone on the pier sells you a “private tour”, ask exactly how long it lasts and where it ends before paying.

Frequently asked questions

How long is a Bosphorus cruise?

A short sightseeing boat takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The public long tour to Anadolu Kavağı takes about 6 hours, including a break of around 2.5 hours. Dinner cruises last 3 to 4 hours.

What is the cheapest way to see the Bosphorus?

A regular ferry from Beşiktaş or Kabataş to Üsküdar or Kadıköy, paid with the Istanbulkart. For the full length of the strait, the Şehir Hatları long tour is the cheapest option.

Can I take a Bosphorus cruise from Beşiktaş?

Yes. Dentur boats leave from Beşiktaş and Kabataş, and the public long tour calls at Beşiktaş in the morning. Beşiktaş is a 20 to 30 minute walk or a 10 minute taxi ride from Nişantaşı.

Do I need to book a Bosphorus cruise in advance?

Not for the public tours or the short sightseeing boats: buy a ticket at the pier. Book sunset, dinner and private cruises in advance, especially at weekends and in summer.

Is a sunset cruise worth it?

If you have one evening for the water, yes: the light is softer, the bridges light up on the way back and most cruises include commentary. If you are on a budget, a regular ferry at sunset gives you a similar view for much less.
