Istanbul Airport (IST) to Nişantaşı (Nisantasi) takes about 45 to 75 minutes by taxi or private transfer, depending on traffic, or well over an hour by metro with one change at Gayrettepe onto the M2 for Osmanbey. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, allow longer: the road crosses a Bosphorus bridge, and the rail route takes well over an hour and a half with two changes. A pre-booked transfer is easiest after a late flight; the metro is cheapest.
Istanbul has two airports. Most international flights land at Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side, the same side as Nişantaşı. Many low-cost flights use Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, which means crossing the Bosphorus. Both are a long way from the centre, so plan the last leg of your trip before you fly.
Quick comparison
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Private transfer | Late arrivals, families, luggage, first-time visitors | Book ahead; costs more than transit |
| Taxi | Direct ride without booking | Queues at peak times; make sure the meter is running |
| Metro | Light luggage, daytime arrivals, tight budgets | Changes with bags; slower overall |
| Airport bus | Budget option to Taksim, then one metro stop | Routes and timetables change; check on arrival |
Private transfer
The simplest option, especially after a long flight. You agree a fixed price in advance, the driver tracks your flight and waits in arrivals with a name sign, and drops you at your hotel door. Nişantaşı’s one-way streets and tight corners make door-to-door service more useful than it sounds.
From Istanbul Airport (IST) by metro
- Follow the signs to the metro from the arrivals hall and take the M11 line towards Gayrettepe.
- At Gayrettepe, change to the M2 line heading south, towards Yenikapı.
- Get off two stops later at Osmanbey. Nişantaşı’s shopping streets are a short walk east.
You will need an Istanbulkart travel card or a single-journey ticket from the machines in the station. Allow well over an hour in total. Our practical tips explain how the Istanbulkart works.
From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW)
Sabiha Gökçen is on the Asian side, so every route crosses the Bosphorus. You have three realistic choices.
- By rail: take the M4 metro from the airport to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, change to the Marmaray line, which runs under the Bosphorus, and ride it to Yenikapı. There, change to the M2 northbound and get off at Osmanbey. It takes two changes and well over an hour and a half, but it never gets stuck in traffic.
- By airport bus: buses run from the terminal to Taksim, and from Taksim the M2 metro is one stop to Osmanbey.
- By car: a taxi or transfer crosses one of the Bosphorus bridges and is very sensitive to traffic, so allow extra time in the evening rush hour.
If you are travelling light and land in daylight, there is a scenic alternative: stay on the M4 to the end of the line at Kadıköy, take the ferry across to Beşiktaş, and finish with a short taxi ride uphill to Nişantaşı.
Airport buses
Both airports run airport bus services to Taksim: Havaist from Istanbul Airport and Havabüs from Sabiha Gökçen. From Taksim, take the M2 metro one stop to Osmanbey, or a short taxi ride if you have heavy bags. Routes, stops and payment methods change from time to time, so check at the bus stand when you arrive.
Taxi
Taxis wait outside both terminals. Make sure the meter is switched on when you set off, and have your hotel’s address written down. Ride-hailing apps that call licensed taxis also work in Istanbul and show the route in advance.
For the ride back or for getting around town, our taxi card has the airports and main destinations written in Turkish, ready to show your driver.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take from Istanbul Airport to Nişantaşı?
Around 45 to 75 minutes by car, depending heavily on traffic. By metro, allow well over an hour including the change at Gayrettepe.
Which airport is more convenient for Nişantaşı?
Istanbul Airport (IST), because it is on the same side of the city and has a direct metro link with a single change. From Sabiha Gökçen you always have to cross the Bosphorus, which adds time and uncertainty in traffic.
How much does a taxi cost?
Fares change often, so we do not quote a figure here. Ask the driver for an estimate before you set off, or use a ride-hailing app that shows the price in advance. A pre-booked transfer gives you a fixed price before you fly.
Can I buy an Istanbulkart at the airport?
Yes. Machines at the airport metro stations sell and top up the card. Buy it there and you can use it for the rest of your stay on the metro, trams, buses and ferries.
Can I take the metro late at night?
Metro service ends around midnight on most nights, and timetables change. For late arrivals, a taxi or a pre-booked transfer is the practical choice.
What happens if my flight is delayed?
Transfer companies track your flight number and adjust the pickup time. Check the waiting-time policy in your booking, and keep the driver’s contact details handy.
